Tignes - Dumpage! |
24 November 2009 |

Finally after it trying very hard to snow for the last couple of days, it finally put down 20cm last night. It was looking pretty dodgy for the opening weekend, but Val have now confirmed it's all good to go - get in!

The Cairngorms are white again after losing all but the deeper drifts in the heavy rain over the previous week. Nevis Range seems to have kept a decent covering and has had a nice top up on the upper mountain. Glenshee's webcam has been showing a bit of snowfall on Glas Maol. Blizzards forecast this week for the Scottish mountain areas so lets hope for something substantial to see the season get underway!!!! :D |

Despite the doom and gloom about the recent warm spell, Verbier is still in pretty good condition and Lac des Vaux was really rather nice yesterday - a relief for everyone given this weeks mild spell and rain very high up. Fingers crossed for more snow soon though. |

Ischgl |
23 November 2009 |
|
Winter starts this week in the top Austrian resort of Ischgl with the slopes in fabulous shape - as the picture taken today (Monday 23 November) shows - while some European ski villages have had to delay opening as they wait for enough snow. The Tirolean village has had regular heavy snowfalls down to village level and the lifts open this Friday (27 November), with most of the runs open and groomed to perfection. Chart-topping singer Katy Perry performs at the season-opening concert in the village centre on Saturday evening, with Victoria Beckham due to drop by a few days later. Ischgl, with a top station at 2,872 metres, has 215 kilometres of runs and links with Samnaun in Switzerland for fantastic cross-border skiing. |

Chamonix is still closed :( so headed over to Verbier for a bit of skiing. Lac de Vaux piste is holding up well, a few hard patches. The run down to Ruinettes while officially still closed wasn't that bad. A bit scratchy in places but not half bad considering it gets very near the snow line. Went for a skin up the shoulder of Mont Gele. Not much snow to play with but still some nice turns to be had ;) |

Excellent first day of skiing in Val T today. Pistes were in great condition and the off piste was lovely according to
Phil and Andrea
Andrea (on skis) and fast on my new Lib Tech banana board. lifts were open – Cascades, Roc, Plein Sud, Peclet. Great sunshine in the morning but became overcast after a great tartiflette lunch up the mountain. After the first few snow flakes were spotted we skidaddled out of there because I hadn’t got snow tyres on my car yet. Great day out – can’t wait for the season to start here in La Tania ! |

22 November 2009 |

2 inches of snow reported overnight. Certainly not enough. It is WARM, close to 50F. 3 lifts open, 3 trails open. The small terrain park is getting a lot of action. Still very early in the season, but it's about that time to start getting into a low pressure weather pattern. If this is all we have open for the Thanksgiving weekend coming up it's going to be crowded. |

I had to throw this pic up from today as well. Single barrel rail, I am representing w/the Clinton Portis jersey, even though my Washington Redskins are horrible! Well, the bad news is that it rained VERY high last night. All the snow in town’s gone and the Savoleyres ridge is losing it’s snow quicker than some of us are losing our hair. But that’s just today. It could all change. People say that it'll get cold on Sunday. There's a horrible cold front in the Atlantic that could make it here and dump. Who knows? Just cross your fingers and keep your chin up... |

Winter Park Resort opened 15 minutes ago or its 70th consecutive season, with 2 lifts & 2 trails, as well as the small ReRailer Terrain Park. Opening day is always a special time of year, b/c if nothing else it means you can leave the front door & be on a lift in 15 minutes for the next 5 months straight! Happy sliding! |

Well, all the mountains are open now. Lake Louise and Sunshine Village are open everyday and Mt Norquay only on the weekends. Fair bit of snow at Sunshine with 5 lifts and around 40 runs open. A few rocks but still some snow coming. Lake louise only has the front face open and coverage is a little patchy. Bring on the snow!!

Just got down from a little cruise around with Kato and the pistes are looking surprisingly better than last weekend – and it wasn’t bad then. The run to Ruinettes is now officially open and whilst if you look really closely you’ll see the odd stone lurking there waiting to trip you up, it’s actually in really good condition. It seems the combination of fresh snow (buckets of rain in resort) and having the canons on has done the trick and piste conditions are really good. So now it’s just the usual sweepstake on when we open all week long. My money’s on a week on Monday. http://www.performanceverbier.com/news-galleries/the-blog/

China |
16 November 2009 |

Massive snow storms have blanketed parts of China disrupting the infrastructure and killing many. The heavy snow has led to at least 48 deaths. It seems out of place to report it, given the human suffering, but several ski resorts including Yabuli, Wanlong and the Nashan ski resort near Beijing have opened early after the snowfall.

The Nov. 12 storm totals were up to 10 inches around Lake Tahoe as anxious skiers and snowboarders await a mass opening of Tahoe ski resorts. But that won’t happen right away unless Mother Nature has a lot more of the white stuff arriving soon. However, if the cold weather continues, many Tahoe-area resorts will be open by Thanksgiving or earlier.

It seems that in the last few weeks we've gone from flip flops and shorts to down jackets. Brilliant. In fact it’s looking like a real (and bizarrely empty) ski resort again. And every time it snows the chance of getting the rest of the top half of the mountain open early increases… |

Copper Mountain, Colorado |
11 November 2009 |

Skied Copper Mountain today. 2 lifts open & true top to bottom skiing available. A bit bullet proof today even w/the sun out, but always nice to get a little burn going on the legs. Nice little terrain park set up with approximately 10 rails/boxes & 1 small jump. On another note skied nearby Jones Pass yesterday. It was pretty brutal - punchy ice layer with about 1cm of fresh. Suffice to say the backcountry is not recommended until we get another decent snow storm. |

Despite rumours to the contrary the lifts opened at nine this morning (Sat 7th) and we were there - a little muted as it was just Lac des Vaux although you could ski to Ruinettes (the lower section was a little ropey). Brilliant to be skiing again, although it is only the first weekend in Novemeber so not loads on offer - just a matter of time until they get the whole top half of resort running though. |

7:20pm Saturday night and the heaviest snow of the season so far down to resort level (and below). Skied Loveland Resort today. They have 2 lifts open and about 4 trails. A nice little terrain park with 6 rails/boxes set up. Overall a nice day, my first of resort skiing for the season. Bad news for the state is that the warm temps (50's F) will continue through Sunday, our next chance for snow, & perhaps more importantly, cold temps so resorts can make snow. Regardless, it's waayy too early in the season to worry. We're all just happy to be making turns in late October/early November. |

The conditions on the glacier are fantastic, temperatures have stayed cold and the winds have been sintering the snow so it’s generally chalky, gripy snow, ideal for letting the skis run and carve at speed. There is the odd pocket of wind drift powdery snow to be found if you work for it. There is great snow coverage all the way down to the mid station already and its only October!! Lower down below the glacier the temperatures have been mild so the snow feels in places much more like melt-freeze spring snow and can be glazed in patches and soft in others but again, ITS OCTOBER and the coverage is great!!!!
