Remarkables

03 July 2009

Remarks got a bit of fresh last night. NZski reported 5cm, which was about right. Very wind affected though, so some deeper pockets of heavy pow around. Gallipolli chutes were skiing well, homeward was still icy in places. Let's hope the snow keeps on coming!

NZ Round Up

29 June 2009

New Zealand is getting closer to all systems go, with the opening of Treble Cone and Whakapapa yesterday and Cardrona on Friday. Trans-Tasman ski fields have been blessed by early snow this year, with Mount Hutt the first to open on May 30 – two weeks ahead of schedule – for the first time in a decade.Turoa – Whakapapa's sister resort, also on the side of Mount Ruapehu on the North Island – opened last Saturday, with a 3000-strong crowd taking to the slopes. All slopes were accessible from top to bottom and the main High Noon Express was also running, the earliest in 30 years.
On the South Island, The Remarkables resort also opened last week, with all lifts running. Amazingly, for this time of year, even the long Homeward Bound off-piste run that extends beyond the ski resort boundary is open, with a shuttle running skiers back up to the base lifts.

10cm overnight was a good top up, but a bit wet to be good skiing.

We need another dump. It has been slushy for a week and parts of the runs are getting patchy.

Remarkables

26 June 2009

It's been sunny all week with some great skiing, but Shadow is getting a bit firm and bare now, a few rocks around! We could really do with more snow. That said, the groomed runs are still nice and the park is great. The park features are getting changed around a bit almost daily to keep things fresh.

25 June 2009

A dusting of snow has settled across the slopes over the past 24 hours. In addition, chilly overnight conditions enabled 78 snow guns to be fired up across Perisher Valley and Blue Cow. Make some tracks in the snowmaking areas today, the snow quality is excellent.

There has been some great early season snow-falls, with Porters now reporting an excellent snow-base on the main runs. Recent snow-making has added to the natural base and the skiing and riding on-piste is looking good. Porters experienced grooming team have been hard at work consolidating the snow-pack, and ensuring the surface is in premium condition for the start of the season.

Treble Cone, NZ

25 June 2009

Treble Cone is boasting the deepest snow depths of all the southern lakes resorts for their Opening Day this Saturday, June 27th.  All main trails are groomed and will be open including the major runs in the Saddle.  Forecasts are calling for more snow throughout Friday, so now is the perfect time to wax those boards and lay out some carves on Treble Cone’s perfect corduroy.

Sunday was not as good as saturday with a mix of cloud and sun. The snow was ok but still very hard... a little dusting of snow on monday just taking the edge of the ice .... the small park could do with a little work, but can understand that they are all working on the big park. which we are all looking forward to see the new snow features for this year.

Mt Hutt

20 June 2009

Hello All

A slightly softer start today, thanks to the small dusting of snow during the night. There was still a few icey patches but the slopes were well groomed and the park was soft enough to hit the jumps. Good news, it looks like the park team are making a start on the big park, and the word around Hutt is that the park will be up and running next weekend. (fingers crossed)...

Good skiing on Highnoon and Merritts today with good quality snow and clear blue skies. The Supertrail opens tomorrow which will

have very good cover due to the excellent snowmaking conditions of late. Despite this, the eagles way access (cat track width) at the top is a bit limited at the moment and a bit tricky to navigate and will take a snow fall to improve it. Once you get past that it is really very good skiing on the groomers all the way to the village.

Hi

So Hutt is looking good. Due to the good snow fall opened 2 weeks early.. unfortunatly because of the good weather and cold nights, has turned the hill in to one big ice skating rink although there is good snow at the top of the six man chair..... on the up side, over the last few days there has been a dusting of snow, which may sofen things for the weekend. small park up and running.. with 2 small kickers, up flat box, flat box, and rainbow box.. all in all good start just less of the ice.

Excellent storm conditions have set the mountain up well for the coming winter. With lots of snow then some wind to fill in the bluffs up high. Continuing cold temps have seen the massive snow making system fire up and nuke the long runs into submission.

The best skiing is on Highnoon supertrail which has brilliant cover and no one on it.

Snowmaking all fired up and delivering the goods since Saturday morning. Weather looking good for more during the week.

Coronet Peak

26 May 2009

Went up there yesterday, dealing with a temperature inversion (8 degrees at the base) so not ideal for snowmaking yet but guns have apparently been fired up & tested and looking good for snowmaking starting this weekend, when very cold (-15!) temps are threatened.

Snowbird, Utah

Yup! It's officially not over at The Bird. Just hot off the email, my sources tell me that most lifts will be open through June 14th so if you're after that non-summer winter holiday, get out to Utah!

Unofficially, $50 says they stay open through July.

If you're still up for some US snow then Snowbird is open through May 10th. Conditions remain pretty tidy or so I'm told with a 171" (4 metre) base, so there could be lifts open even longer. Just watch for the bullet-proof ice in the morning from freeze-thaw.
