play, rest and work in winter park

Winter Park is a laid back and friendly town, with good skiing, boarding, and fantastic snow.  Very mellow place, with plenty to offer.

3000 meters in town, 4,000 at the top most point of the ski resort.

Bars and Clubs
Buckets Saloon - The young crowd makes Buckets it's home.  Sunday and Wednesday nights are Latin and Ladie's nights, so good non weekend options.  Three pool tables.  Laundry mat in the back, get a few drinks while dropping your load.

Winter Park Pub - Live music about every other weekend, happy hour 4-7, a bit older crowd than Buckets.

Deno's - Old school WP crowd.  The guy at the end of the bar may tell you the same story 3 different times throughout the night, but they are harmless, and living history of the valley.

Smoking Moes - BBQ restaurant with live music 1-2 times a month, national touring artists.

Untamed Grill - Only true microbrewery in town, great big bar, live music on some weekends, best food in town.

Crooked Creek - 2 miles down the road in Fraser, very blue collar, cheap drinks, colorful locals.

Off-piste
Allow for a 50 -70 inch base to form before going into the trees, or you could wind up watching the snow from your living room couch.

Mary Jane is the spot, just follow the local's tracks in.  Unfortunately due to it's proximity to Denver the trees even get tracked out by late morning on weekends, weekdays are dead.

Skier's right off the top of Parsenn Bowl has great tree skiing.

Check avalanche reports, Grand County is one of the most avalanche prone areas in the US.

Moguls
There is a reason Winter Park is consistently ranked #1 in North America in moguls.  Two words, "The Jane", as Mary Jane is affectionately known by locals.  Bring your A game, these volkswagon size bumps will humble the most hardcore of skiers.

Speed
Check the grooming report in the morning and bomb down whatever corduroy is available.  Hughes is a good one, same goes for Mary Jane Trail or Sleeper (if you can get either one within 20 minutes of the lifts cranking up).  The riding under the Olympia Express high speed quad is also good.

Nastar Course set up above Snoasis restaurant.

Snowparks
Since WP was bought by Intrawest in late 2002, terrain parks have improved dramatically (you would expect that from the owners of Whistler).  A 5 minute ride on the Eskimo hi speed quad gets you from bottom to top, with 4 distinct sections (including 18 foot wall superpipe in section 3) to rip.  Dark territory in section 4 is accessible by special pass ($20 after you watch a video and sign your life away) and contains a 55 foot and a 65 foot kicker.

The intermediate park is known as Dog Patch, and the beginner park is Jack Kendrick.

Events
Winter Park seems to be holding a competition every weekend, be it race, park, or moguls, pro or amateur, local talent or international.  The NSCD (National Sports Center for the Disabled), the largest such program in the world, is also located at WP, and hosts many competitions throughout the season.

Jingle Rails is a New Year's Eve rail competition for snowboarders only, held in town.

Wells Fargo Bank in late February gets celebrities and athletes from Denver up to race each other for charity.

Chef's cup in late January is a benefit for the competiton center, and pits local restaurants against each other in a slalom competition, as well as a cooking competition, tasting, live music.

The final day of the year is known as Spring Splash, for the pond skimming competition held on the WP side.  However, the real party is in C-Lot on the Jane, and starts at the crack of dawn (or possibly the night before) and doesn't end until sundown (or possibly the following morning).

Away Days
There's plenty to do away from the slopes. Snowmobiling, dog mushing, snowshoeing, ice fishing, ice skating.  A small museum showcasing local histroy.  Rocky Mountain National Park is 45 minutes to the west (although admittedly more of a summer destination).

Denver is 2 hours away - A decent city with plenty of non snow things to do.  Getting as many days of sunshine as Southern California, you could fit in a game of golf (or frisbee gold if that is more your style) in between ski days.

Hot Sulphur Springs, about 35-45 minutes West on Hwy. 40, is the perfect spot to soak those aching muscles. However, the tricky part is driving back after you are done, keep those eyes open!

Steamboat Springs is 2 hours west on Hwy. 40, and Summit County about the same via Hwy 70 or 9.

Shopping
Summit county this is not.  Standard shopping options, but nothing that will blow you away.  You are here to ski and drink beer anyway.

Internet Cafés
The library in nearby Fraser offers free internet.  Several places in town offer Wi-fi service, including Rocky Mountain Roastery, and the Copy and Ship next to Conoco offers pay internet.

Eating Out
Untamed Grill - Best food in town, great microbrews.

Hernandos - Great pizza, ask about all the dollar bills on the wall.

Carlos and Marias - Mexican.

Smokin' Moes - BBQ.

Winter Park Pub - $12.95 deep dish monster pizza any way you like it on Saturday

Sushi Bar - Good sushi, great martinis.

New Hong Kong - Chinese.

Deno's - Steaks, pizza, pasta, seafood.

Devil's Thumb - 5 star, special occasion kind of place.  About 3 miles from town.  Great bar to hang in and soak up the ambiance.

Mirasol - Great tacos in many styles, cheap.

Fontenot's - Great seafood and cajun style cuisine.

Wine

Believe it or not WP has Verso wine cellars for tasting and purchase, wines produced in Grand Junction mostly.

Fraser has a wine shop that imports grapes from California, and does the rest in town at nearly 9,000 feet!

Mountain Restaurants
The lodge at Sunspot offers cafeteria style on one side and table service (with excellent views on the other).  Club Car at the base of Mary Jane has good food, and Pepperoni's Pizzeria is downstairs.  Derailer Bar at the base of WP has pub food, drink specials, and happy hour starts promptly at 3pm with the blasting of Ozzy's famous ode to revelry, "Crazy Train", also paying homage to the trains passing directly past the base of the resort.

Grocery Stores
Safeway in Fraser standard supermarket. Winter Park organic market in town - great smoothies, organic goodies.

Transfer Day
Most will fly into Denver and either rent a car or take Home James Shuttle to town ($50 o/w).  WP is 2 hours from the airport.

Living
Plenty of apartments in Fraser for rent, anywhere from a week to a season, less available in WP.  Guesthouses, B&B's, Hotels, + a great hostel in Fraser (Rocky Mountain Inn) as well.
