play, rest and work in st anton

If any resort is going to chew you up and spit you out, it’s St. Anton am Arlberg.

Renowned the world over for its technical skiing it’s some wonder any skiing is done here at all given the fast and furious nature of it’s apres ski.

Without doubt the kaiser of Austria's skiing, the Arlberg Ski area includes the resorts of Lech, Zurs, Sonnenkopf, St. Christoph and not forgetting powdersville : Stuben. World Championship standard facilities and a superbly cosmopolitan winter population make St. Anton a prime candiate for a cracking season. That is if you can get past those coming back for seconds...

Bars and Clubs
A week in St. Anton will see you staggering between any number of bars, some more famous than others…here goes, starting on the piste…of course.

The Krazy Kangaruh - Apres wild and multinational. Worker’s Thursday hangout. On red 23 from the Gampen. Can traverse across from Blue 1 as long as you see the sign.

The Mooserwirt - Fun starts at 3 in the afternoon and earlier. Ends when it feels like it. More beer sold here than anywhere else in Austria by all accounts, it’s certainly packed for the complete season. Hang out in the igloo tent outside for a bit more space, and to look out for the piste bashers grooming your ski home in the dark. Follow the noise from either home run.

The Sennhutte - Schnapps, bier, dancing on tables, austrian music from accordians and djs…typical austrian apres then. Just off Blue 1 before you head towards the Mooserwirt a bit lower down.

Taps - Next to the KK, slightly quieter, still have to ski home from it. Hold the annual Antoner’s races in April.

Then if you make it to the resort in one piece…

Scotty’s - Starting point in the village for all the UK seasonworker’s evening antics. Mark Warner run place, with great pizza in the adjoining Rosanna Pizzeria. Great staff prices. Heinous drinks of all colours! Home of the Turbo Rum Death and a bi weekly fancy dress.

The Funky Chicken - Skandi-ville. Home of beautiful swedes, and the resort’s southern hemisphere population. Also birth place of the very alcoholic Frozen Margharita! Endless ski vids and grilled chicken dishes. Staff prices too. Movies on Weds PM.

Bar Cuba - Later opening bar and disco. More heinous exclusive drinks including the aquamarine wonder Cuban Cocaine. Whoa! Staff prices. Fasching and Silvester antics in Fancy dress. Amazing self service beer dispenser. New for 2002/3 doing apres! Full football program and their self pour beer machine is up and running causing quite a stir, and is now my favorite barperson in town.

The Underground / Black Hole - Two music based venues, one building, two very different atmospheres. Upstairs piano bar. Very full always. Downstairs dark and atmospheric. Better fun, and better music (IMHO). Room to jump around should the urge take you. Great long island ice teas.

Bobo’s - Tex mex food, and occasional live music. Pub crawl venue for most.

Piccadilly / Postkeller - Front bar with live music. Back bar with everything that a german holidaymaker might like. Live acts and occasional celeb PAs like the all too popular DJ Otzi. One of the biggest in town.

Kartouche - Sadly no longer with us.

Kandahar - By day an asian restaurant. By night…allsorts. Site of the Renaissance club visits fortnightly Winter 2002.

Stanton - Not a a lot of UK seasonaire business, but if you want a quiet very late drink then that’s your place.

Platzl bar - Music bar, occasional fantastic music.

Other apres places include the Hotel Post’s outside Igloo, and the Anton Café at the foot of the home run…many a cheeky beer there, only really populated in the early apres hours.

Off-piste
Get a guide and do it properly. The best runs off the Valluga are only accessible with one. You won’t be allowed on the lift with ski equipment without a qualified guide

Otherwise it’s everywhere. Notable routes include the back and front sides of the Rendl. A good starting point for the timid are the skiroutes from the back lifts (Valluga cable and Shindlergrat chair), which are unpisted, steep and patrolled. Zurs, Stuben, and Lech have plentiful routes also.

Moguls
Valluga – take Schindlergrat chair, turn right onto skiroute 15, then follow down. As you round the mountain via the path, a magnificent field of monsters drops away to your left. Spot them from the Galzig on you way over.

Everywhere else – as the pistes are quite technical, and are left ungroomed for a little while after snowfall, much to the annoyance of less accomplished skiers.

Speed
World cup downhill into Nasserein, Black 25…end up in the new World Championship arena and get them to ring a cow bell for you…

Snowparks
A big improvement on a few years ago. Lech has a big park. In St Anton, Rendl has a small and well prepared park for beginners and experts at the Fly-In.

Events
Various entertainment. DJ Otzi dropped in this year with the Davis Cup paasing through. Rendl Big Air – worker oriented small Freestyle comp. Freestyle events in Lech. The Weisse Rausch…The big end of season race from Valluga to Home, including a Le Mans style run up a slope in the early stages...

You can always go celeb spotting. Those allegedly spotted last season include Alan Hansen, Kenny Dalgleish, Jonny Ball, Dermot and Vernon from T4. Gary Lucy and the guy who plays Lewis from Hollyoaks. DJ Otzi. Right Said Fred. Louis Theroux. And reports of Robbie Williams from Lech.

Away Days
Landeck, Innsbruck (good for most stuff) & Zurich if you really want to. International rail link in village centre means anywhere is close.

Shopping
Two boarder shops (Supa – Surfer’s Paradise and Snow Control). One specialist off piste shop for Telemark goodies. Plenty of ski shops, a great odd drinks place and much more. Most shops look after workers well if you get to know them.

Internet Cafés
Mailbox on main street. Extra mailbox terminal in Surfers Paradise.

New for 2002/3 - New Versalla gallery : Brand new development this year includes among other things a new internet laundry. Yes, you read that right. Surf the net while washing your clothes! Open until 10pm for internet access when the mailbox is shut.

Eating Out
It’s absurd. The food here is great value, and can cater for all.

Rosanna - (referred to normally as Scotty’s due to proximity) The Mark Warner central hub. Like Pizza Express, but more filling, and better. Pomodoro - When Rosanna is full…nearly as good.
Gusto - My fave. Modern Austrian/European, good food, great prices.
Bobos - Yeehaa! Tex Mex…
The Funky Chicken - More grilled chicken than you can shake a stick at. Good food for the hardcore riders that frequent the place.
Mooserwirt - Absurdly large rib plates and other ski suitable food on the piste.
The Snack Attack - The centre of St Anton’s life. Pass through when they decide to open and fight your way through the drunken dutch, english and swedes, for kebabs, divine burritos (I ate about 1 a day for the entire season), veggie burritos, steak sandwiches, hotdogs, burgers and BLT wraps. Genius.
The Neue Post - Upmarket Hotel food with prices to match. The Grieshof - Same again, even better.
Amalis - for café bites
Haferl - for great hot choc and gluhwein with your kase-shinken toast. Anton Café - for apres bites.
KK - does food for the Apres hoards within.

Mountain Restaurants
Vary in quality. Most good. Standouts include : the small restaurant near the bottom of the Rendl home run (name eludes me) and the Neustadl on the Galzig home run, just before you happen upon the Sennhutt and the Mooserwirt, both of which themselves do food.

McDonalds
If you must, then closest is Imst. Otherwise make the smart move and go to the Snack Attack

Shopping Day
This is Austria. Most stuff is delivered. Most use suppliers in Landeck. There is a reasonably priced Spar supermarket in resort with a decent butchers within which does chalet supply.

Transfer Day
Straightforward and mostly from Innsbruck, occasionally from Zurich. Only really heavy snowfall makes a difference. Lech transfers can be nightmare in those times,as the Arlberg pass closes, although reopens very quickly after snowfall.

Après-ski Options
With the energy of the resorts own apres ski, there’s not a whole lot to sell here. The pub crawls work. I’ve never seen a quiz though…I imagine there’s some Austrian bowling around somewhere.

Living
Some who are bumming and don’t have the advantages of company provided accomodation find that Pettneu, a short bus hop away is the best solution.

Otherwise, most chalets are located in the Nasserein area, which has it’s own lift to the ski area, although is a 10 minute trek into town. Certainly nowhere is far away in St. Anton and skibuses connect the burbs in well.
