RESORT BLOGGERS: Becoming a Snowboard Instructor in Canada

By EA Ski & Snowboard, 9 Jan '14 at 01:25

Find out what its like becoming an EA snowboard instructor in Banff in Sarah Hunter’s third blog update fresh from the Canadian Rockies!

I am so happy that I can now call myself a certified Snowboard Instructor! I was so nervous during the 3 day long exam but battled through it and it was the best feeling ever to find out that I had passed. Since then I have dived straight into work at Mount Norquay and because it has been the busiest period of the season I have been able to gain a lot of experience already. Students have ranged from a 4 year old boy to a 50 year old man and I have really enjoyed having this variety and seeing how everyone is different. I have been giving either 1 hour, 2 hour or full day lessons to individuals and groups of different abilities but the majority of people are beginners who are new to snowboarding.

Each day before we start work we go on a training session with a senior member of the snowboarding team and I love this opportunity to catch first lifts and get some valuable coaching and tips from experienced Snowboard Instructors. It’s a great way to start the day and warm up ready for teaching!
We celebrated the New Year in style last week by heading out onto the Main Street in Banff where thousands of people joined to watch the firework display- it was the biggest street party I’d ever seen.

I had my first day off yesterday and spent it well by getting a bus over to Lake Louise with two of my EA friends. There had been some fresh snow so we spent the day making the most of this and exploring the huge resort!

Today I gave myself a day off from snowboarding and swapped my board for my ice skates and went skating on the free outdoor ice rink in Banff. We had the rink to ourselves and the scenery was beautiful. It is great that there is so much to do here in Banff- I am never bored!
