Over 5km vertical in 3 hours at SUMiT GPS Challenge

13 January 2007 00:00

Meribel, the 27th December. No snow? Tell that to Robert Matthews, Eloise Till and Chris Taylor who traveled over 190km between them in 3 hours at SUMiT’s first GPS challenge of the season.

The challenge was simple:

  • Rock up at the Rond Point Bar, Meribel with skis or board.
  • Get a GPS tracker from SUMiT reps Mark and Adam
  • The rules? Be back within 3 hours and don’t use the same lift more than 4 times.
  • GO!
  • Ride ride ride! Clock up as much distance travelled as possible.

3 hours of hard riding later...
Competitors returned at 2.30pm, ready to grab a bite to eat and a refreshing beer form the bar while SUMiT got on with the job of figuring out who won. Each competitor would get a printout of their mad dash on the hill (example available at the SUMiT website) and the chance to win great prizes, donated by Natives, Liberty skis and Freeride.fr.

Scotts hosts after-party
Scotts Bar was chosen as the presentation venue allowing competitors a little time for a wash up (or bar crawl). Scotts welcomed our challengers with free shots and the promise of a live band to follow the presentation.

So our congratulations go to:

  • 1st Place, Female Skier – Eloise till – 69.36km
  • 1st Place, Male Skier – Robert Matthews – 70.54km
  • 1st Place, Male Boarder – Chris Taylor – 53.20km

Goodie bag, drinks & SUMiT GPS presentation sheet
Each of our winners took away a goodie bag of drinks and skiwear to show off to their friends whilst everyone in the event was presented with their SUMiT sheet, showing their distance traveled, descent, speeds, lift/ski times and a map of the route that they took.

LA TANIA, 02 JAN 2007
La Tania host 2nd SUMiT GPS Challenge on 2nd Jan
A snowy (at last!) start was made to the second challenge in La Tania – this time we asked competitors to rack up as much vertical descent as possible, measured again by SUMiT GPS trackers.

5km vertical in 3 hours
Winners Olly Bendall (ski) and Phil Elliot (board) walked away with their prizes at the Natives Show Love Tour Party, hosted at Pub Le Ski Lodge. Each of them had managed to cover almost 5km each of vertical descent in their 3 hours. All competitors were given their own personal SUMiT sheet for comparison.
