No sooner had the season finished than work began
on demolishing the resort's clock tower.
Such
was the emotion surrounding the destruction of this
Breckenridge landmark of the last 25 years the event
was accompanied by a firework display. The tower,
a familiar landmark for British skiers who make Breckenridge
to most popular destination for Britons, has to go
so that the resort can make 'better use' of the prime
land site and erect a $100 million development of
retail and lodging.
Despite
the loss of the tower, visitors will be pleased to
learn that several high rise plans were rejected in
favour of a design which makes better use of the space,
putting parking underground and maintaining the view.
This
latest stage in Breckenridge development comes at
the end of another good season for the resort which
continues to be the best performer of Vail's four
resorts. In 1999-2000 it bucked the trend in Colorado,
which again saw visitor numbers
drop, by increasing business over last year.
