TUROA OVERWHELMED BY SNOW

13 June 2000

Turoa Ski Resort is shaping up for a huge snow season.

Turoa currently has a snow base of 50cm on the upper slopes is preparing for an opening date of 23 June, snow and weather permitting. This would be the earliest start to the ski season at Turoa in four years.

"The current storm cycle has brought snow down to the 4km point on the Ohakune Mountain Road. Once it's passed we will be able to assess the situation and start packing and forming trails on the upper slopes with the grooming machines" said Vanessa Thomas of Turoa Resort.

"We've had some great snowfall over the past few weeks", Vanessa told Natives. "Southerly storms like the present one always favour our South-west aspect on the slopes of Mount Ruapehu".
