Jo Greig, 18 and winner of
the Super-G at the British Championships
earlier this month spoke to Natives about her success.
'It was a complete surprise!' Jo told
us. 'My start number was 36 out of 40, but I
ended up winning by 7/10 of a second.'
Jo route to the top has been accelerated
by her involvement in the UK Girls Alpine Development
Squad, a group of twenty of promising female skiers.
'It's a very strong group - the first dedicated to
girls at this level,' Jo told us.
Jo plans to take next year as a gap
year before starting university. 'Hopefully
I'll be going to Bath. They have excellent training
facilities and a scholarship scheme for sports people.'
First she has the small matter of
her A levels to get through, something that doesn't
trouble most athletes. 'I had to sit one exam
while I was in Austria. The examination board
were very understanding and I took two modules in
a school in Saalbach, watched over by a local teacher.'
Next year Jo plans to take the opportunity
to see how she can do committing herself to training
and competing full-time. Natives wondered how
she and other aspiring British skiers manage to afford
to stay on the race circuit - she smiled, 'Our parents
love us a lot!'
