Be Authentic

When you are in the process of writing, you can often be stumped for ideas and hit a writer’s block, however never be tempted to write something for the sake of it. If you force music out then your audience will be able to tell. You should also never write about something that is not true to you, in other words be genuine and be authentically you – stick to your own music style. Your listeners will be able to tell if you are not being yourself and trying to sell them a story that means nothing to you. Music is largely about emotion so you need to feel connected to the song in order to get your listeners to feel that same emotion that you are aiming to get across.

If you ever need a helping hand, some feedback or to simply discuss your ideas with other writers, Reddit is the perfect place to do that. Many song writers use Reddit as a way to receive feedback online before letting anyone else listen to your song. People online are likely to be honest with you and you can then learn from it.

First Draft, Second Draft

Regardless of how long you have been writing songs for, you will probably never be able to write the perfect song first time and that is perfectly fine (and normal). Lyrics will very rarely be perfect in the first draft; however, you may keep some things the same. It is normal to write many drafts of a song before deciding that it is perfect and you have your song. Never let the lengthy process discourage you from continuing, writing lyrics can often take months at a time.

However, if you are ever completely stumped and feel that you need a little extra help then Best British Essay has put together a list of great writing services that may be able to help you out.

Write What You Know

Similarly, to the first pointer, you should always write what you know and this is one of the top tips that any music expert will give you. Inspiration for great songs are all around you, you just have to look to find it. Think about some of your past life experiences, what evokes an emotional reaction when you think about it? Write about what you have experienced and are passionate about sharing with others through music.

Try to write about different experiences and not the same thing over and over again. While there are a lot of singers out there who mainly sing about relationships, you will notice that there is always something that differentiates the songs from each other. There is only so many times you can write about being in love with your girlfriend or that girl you wish liked you back. Try and trigger some big emotions and tap into much bigger topics that are already within you. If you want to retell similar stories then try and distinguish what makes the two songs different and what other aspect do you want to say.
