THE 2000 RIP CURL PRO, BELLS BEACH, AUSTRALIA

27 April 2000

Sunny Garcia won this year's title at the spiritual capital of Australian surfing, Bells Beach.

Featured in 'Point Break', Bells is a Mecca for Australian surf fans. A natural amphitheatre, Bells has been the venue for the Rip Curl Pro since 1973 making it the longest pro contest still going today.

Experts rate Bells as the ultimate venue. Simon Anderson, 1981 Champion, summed it up this way: 'It's more hard core down there, and there's the tradition, and I think that's the key. Bells combines all the elements of surfing. You can go down the coast surfing, there's the contest, the partying, cruising in the Kombi...it's what surfing's all about.'
