Perfect
opening conditions of blues skies, groomed trails and that special
opening day ambience was enjoyed by well over 2000 people at Coronet
Peak today.
The wine flowed as the first chairs loaded at about 8.50am and waiting
skiers and boarders were served complimentary Lindauer by Lindauer
staff sporting magnums of the popular bubbly.
Natives out to play
Ski area manager Duncan Smith described the day as a "giant reunion
party. It was an awesome, stunning day and everyone was just stoked,"
he said. "Without doubt it was a record opening day. It felt like
half the town was up here. The atmosphere was great with everyone
taking a few runs then kicking back on the deck enjoying the company
of friends and the cool tunes of DJ Downtown before gearing up for
a few more runs."
"The enthusiasm this year is phenomenal. We've felt it building
in the town for weeks now, and people were really enjoying the conditions
with many of their favourite runs open, and of course, the weather
is turning it on this weekend."
Cooler temps, more snow
Natural snowstorms and ideal snowmaking conditions over the past
three weeks resulted in the best opening conditions for several
years. The Coronet Express quad chair, Meadows double chair, the
magic carpet and handle tow were all operating offering access to
extensive terrain suitable for all levels of skiers and riders.
The brand new Greengates Express six seater chairlift is scheduled
to open later this month as the snow base builds and further slopes
and trails are progressively opened.
"Today was a fantastic start to what is shaping up to be a great
season," said Mr Smith. "We've opened with twice as much terrain
as is typical for this time of year. The weather outlook is positive
and we expect to be able to open more slopes soon."
