TEENAGERS INVINCIBLE?

06 June 2005

Teenagers often have a sense of invincibility, which carries over to their sports and leisure pursuits, says a new survey.

Teenagers and protective equipment
A survey by the American Academy of Pediatrics and American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons questioned adolescents, ages 13-18, at venues for extreme sports to determine reasons they did or did not wear personal protective equipment (PPE).

The study concluded that teens who in-line skate, skateboard and snowboard under-use protective equipment designed to help prevent injuries and enhance safety in their ‘extreme’ sports and activities.

Snowboarders wear least PPE
Worryingly for the snowsports industry, the study showed that while in-line skaters wore the most PPE, snowboarders wore the least.

Perhaps not entirely related, on the other side of the world in New Zealand, the closest hospital to the Silverdale indoor ski and snowboarding centre has noticed a sharp increase in orthopaedic injuries since the Snowplanet opened in March. Injuries ranged from "things that don't come to hospital, to the occasional back injury". Snowplanet rents helmets and provides free wrist guards to snowboarders.

Get your hands on a helmet
While many domes do rent out helmets, it is far more pleasant to have your own. You can be sure that it is a perfect fit, always to hand and hasn't been on hundreds of sweaty heads before yours!
