WINTER STORM DUMPS ON SOUTH ISLAND

31 May 2005

Snow sports enthusiasts in Canterbury and Queenstown New Zealand were fizzing on Sunday as the snow clouds cleared over Mt Hutt, Coronet Peak and The Remarkables ski areas to reveal mountains thickly covered in snow.

Plummeting temperatures
All three ski areas received more than 15cm of new snow in an icy blast that gripped the South Island. Plummeting temperatures were welcomed by snow making crews who have fired up the snow making machines in anticipation of targeted opening days.

Mt Hutt Ski Area Manager Dave Wilson said the snowfall and cold weather bode well for next weekend's targeted opening. "There's been a big drop in temperature which means we can now get snowmaking underway. Certainly, the natural dump is a great help."

Coronet PeakGetting all fired up
Coronet Peak Mountain Manager Russell Hall said the new snow was a fantastic help in the lead up to Coronet's targeted opening on June 11. "We've fired up the snowmaking and it's really all go now for the winter."

At The Remarkables, the targeted opening day is June 25 snowmaking has begun. "Once the winter storm pattern sets in, things start happening pretty quickly in the mountains. We're ready for the season to get started and are confident of meeting our targeted opening date."
