Speciality clothing on the up
The SIA (SnowSports Industries America) has reported overall sales
for the entire winter sport market up 1.9% $2.25 billion for the
Aug 2004 to Mar 2005 period. This figure is on adverage, and reflects
a large growth in specialised fashion items.
Unit sales were down 7.8 percent. Sales at specialty ski and snowboard
shops were up 1.5 percent compared to last season. In dollars, that
translates to $1.74 billion in sales compared to $1.71 billion for
the same period last season. Unit sales were down from last season
3.3 percent.
Overall Equipment Sales (alpine, snowboard, Nordic, Telemark) -
down 2%
Alpine skis - down 14%
Twin tip skis – up 26%
Carve skis – up 65%
Fat skis – down 13%
Midfat skis – down 49%
Junior ski sales – down 15%
Total alpine boot sales – No change
Bindings – down 20% (partly due to the growth of integrated systems)
Alpine poles – down 5%
Telemark ski sales – down 7%
Telemark boots – up 2%
Tlemark bindings - own 4%
Snowboard equipment sales (including snowboards, boots and bindings)
- Down 3%
Snowboards - down 5%
Snowboard boots - down 6%
Snowboard bindings – up 3%
All mountain boards - down 10%
Freestyle boards – no change (38% of all boards sold)
Freeride boards – down 3%
Step-in boots – down 21%
Step-in bindings – down 76%
Non step-in boots – down 7%
Overall Specialty apparel sales - up 6%
Insulated parka - up 13%
Soft shell parkas – up 15%
Vest sales - up 42%
Fleece sales – up 11%
Snowboard apparel – down 8%
Headwear - down 3%
Gloves - down 10%
Mittens - down 3%
