OXFORD SKI WINS THE POLAR CHALLENGE

04 May 2005

The Polar Challenge is one of the most gruelling events on the planet. 30 teams head across the Arctic in the race to the Magnetic North Pole. Competitors race over 340 nautical miles on skis pulling 120lb pulks through the home of 80% of the world's polar bears, where temperatures drop to -50C and colder, and where only 2 meters of ice separate them from seas 4000m deep!

Things that can eat you
As previously covered on Natives, the training is thorough, to say the least. A few months ago we heard that Rupert Longsdon of The Oxford Ski Company was joining a team in the race and was particularly concerned about being eaten by a Polar Bear.

Congratulations Rupert!
We are pleased to announce that Rupert, along with his team, have not only avoided the bears but have won the Polar Challenge which, ironically, was sponsored by Scott Dunn! Check out the Team Hardware site.

The team encountered some problems along the way, such as this inquisitive visitor who made off with the hot chocolate...

Still time to donate
Details of the race are on www.polar-challenge.com. Rupert accepted the challenge to raise money for the Uphill Ski Club, and would still love your support in a bid to make some more money for charity. He is raising money for the Uphill Ski Club and donations can be made online.
