In a recent interview with Dalbello Europe (his boot sponsors),
top freerider, Shane McConkey admitted that he preferred skiing
in Europe to the States.
Land
of the free
“In Europe the ski resorts are much bigger than in the US and you
are allowed to go wherever you want,” McConkey said. "In the
US they don’t allow you to go off piste and there are too many rules,”
he continued. “Europe is the land of the free.”
When questioned about the freestyle skiing becoming
a new way of thinking, McConkey went into fine philosophical mode:
“Skiing is a way to express creativity; it’s a free form of expression.
That is true skiing and that is true freestyle and freeride.”
Skiing is cool
As to the growing trend of snowboarders going back to skiing, McConkey
controversially suggested that ‘skiing has a better looking image
and style’.
“In the past skiing had this really old, stale, upper class image
that most people couldn’t relate to. Being a skier doesn’t necessarily
mean you are an idiot anymore.”
