Following
our recent Meribel race report, we've just
had the latest news on Kwame Acheampong attempts to qualify for
the Olympics for Ghana.
First official FIS race
In Kwame's first official FIS international race in Val Thorens
- a Giant Slalom - he finished in 68th position from a total number
of 111 racers. This means that from the starting point of 1000 FIS
points he is now down to 416.65 points. He needs to get down to
140 points to qualify for the Olympics.
This race and his build up was filmed exclusively by Granada Television
for the 'Airport' programme which will be broadcast to over 8 million
viewers. They filmed over 8 days, at home training with his coach
Dave Jacobs at Xscape Indoor Ski Centre in Milton Keynes, at Luton
Airport and out in resort training and racing.
Easyjet sponsorship
Kwame has now secured of Easy Jet sponsorship to travel to key races
around the world. His next stop will be Iran for 6 days, courtesy
of Easy Jet and the Iranian Ski Federation, in search of yet more
(or fewer) FIS points.
Natives understands that Kwame has no funding and is borrowing money
to fund this trip. The only support he is getting is product, although
he still requires a good ski sponsor. He has given up his job and
left his wife and 1 year old child back in UK in order for him to
reach his goal.
