LOSING THE FRENCH CONNECTION

20 February 2005

Last minute changes
It's Sunday early morning (transfer day) and all major British travel agencies has decided to change their departure destinations. Usually they use Toulouse and Barcelona airports to bring the British, Irish and Dutch skiers back home, but the French authorities have yet to clean up the road to access Andorra from the North, ending in this decision.

Access denied
After two big snow storms during February, the French refused to clean up and open the North access to the principalty, leaving Pas de la Casa isolated for 19 hours. Three coaches were stranded in the middle of the way between Toulouse and Pas, left to their luck in the worst snow storm of the year so far.

The last of these coaches reached the hotel two days later (after being rescued by Andorran Mountain Rescue and Police teams) and they got their luggage on Thursday (four days later). The 240 tourists were travelling with the tour companies Panorama and First Choice.

Free snowploughs offered
The Andorran Minister of Tourism had visited them to be sure they where okay and to explain this situation that even after offering the Andorran snowplows trucks to French authorities they refused to take the snow away from the roads.

Looks like French are not very interested in the 6,000 tourists that each year pay their airport tax at Toulouse-Blagnac Airport to go skiing in Andorran resorts.

Only entrance through Spain

For this reason, all flights will arrive and leave from Barcelona and Girona airports and the only 'entrance' to the principalty will be through the Spanish border.
