Christmas and New Year
As per usual, Xmas eve was a relatively drunken affair, with the
usual array of Santa hats, outfits and several fairies dotted around
the resort. Every bar was heaving, and I don't think I've seen so
many people around one bar as I did in Le Kalico that evening!
New
Years was a colossal party on the piste outside the Croissette,
with a light show, sound stage and topped off at midnight with a
stunning fireworks display.
The hardcore among the Courchevelites
stayed out there til 2am and well done to the lads on vin chaud
duty for donning the most attractive one pieces in the 3 valleys!!
Asia remembered
It's strange to
think about what was happening on the other side of the planet as
most of us were tucking into our turkey curries. Following the tragic
events in Asia on 26th December, every lift in the 3 valleys stopped
at midday on Wednesday 5th January for 3 minutes silence in remembrance.
A big shout to everyone at Bar Le Jump, who for one day donated
all of their tips and a percentage of the day's takings in aid of
the relief operation following the tsunami, and a total of 2011
euros was raised.
BBQs, bands and beer
On Wednesday 26th January, Le Floride in 1650 kicked off their season
of bbq's on the terrace with everyone in the full spirit of Australia
day, including the first annual Ski Olympics (boot slinging, ski
pole javelin, and other weird and wonderful events!) and 2MJ providing
the soundtrack for the afternoon. Wednesday bbq's will now be a
permanent fixture in the week's events, taking over from the New
Solarium.
Le
Floride is situated at the bottom of the piste in 1650, near the
Jardin d'enfants, to the far right as you ski down into the resort.
For those coming from the centre of town, take the Rue de La Rosiere
and the hotel is near the end on the right hand side. With Fourplay
confirmed for the rest of the season and Fat Face sponsoring the
whole lot, it's a great way to kick start your après ski!
Let it snow...
On Tuesday 18th January, it started snowing. It stopped six days
later and an estimated metre of snow covered the Courchevel Valley.
This dump was much needed as certain pistes (Lac Bleu, from the
Col de Loze, in particular) were brown, rocky and extremely dangerous.
After nearly a week of constant snow, everything looked the way
it should at this time of year - white!!!
The next dump we had started
on Friday 11th February and is due to stay until Valentines day,
although with the low fronts moving down from the northern Atlantic
it may stay for longer - all good, as parts of the valley were starting
to get fairly icy.
The off piste is fantastic,
but extremely dangerous and although from a chairlift it may look
like a nice powder field, the winds have been blowing and the snow
isn't that deep so be careful (especially under the Dou des Lanches
chair halfway up from La Tania….be REALLY careful!).
Holiday
time
Now we're fully into both English and French school holidays, all
the Courchevel resorts are extremely busy, especially with the recent
snow, so watch out for those kamikaze five year olds!!
Big thanks to the crew who've kept me reasonably sane during the
periods of time I've spent off the hill thanks to slipped discs
and strained ligaments, don't know what I'd have done without you
guys, be back up doing myself more injuries soon!! Love ya all xx
