A Chicago suburb is claiming it has unseated
a Switzerland ski town for staging the world's biggest snowball
fight.
Thousands
of participants
Some 2,936 people showed up in Wauconda on Saturday to beat the
Guinness Book of World Records mark of 2,473 participants in a sustained
snowball fight.
The event, put on by the local Lions Club in a Wauconda park, caused
traffic to back up for miles, the Arlington Heights Daily Herald
reported.
"There's no way I could miss this," said Tim Hannan of Chicago.
"It's not often you can be part of a record like this."
Thirty referees to keep the peace
The park was cut in half with two equal teams separated by 70 feet
with snow fences. At least 30 referees kept participants from getting
too competitive.
One team donned purple bandanas on their arms, the other gold so
Guinness judges watching a video of the fight could tell how many
people took part.
New record by 463 snowballers
In the end, the Chicago suburb -- by its own count -- beat the record
held by Obersaxen-Mundaun at Graubunden resort by 463 snowballers.
