SAFETY ON AND OFF PISTE

26 January 2005

Itching for powder

Today is a stunning day in the Alps, and although most areas are not fully open yet, many season workers and holidaymakers will be itching to get at the fresh powder out there.

We at Natives say, go for it! It's what seasons are all about. But please, please, anyone heading off piste should make sure they have assessed all possible risks beforehand.

Be prepared
Having the appropriate safety equipment is essential, but this will not stop an avalanche, only increase your chances of surviving it, or finding someone else before it's too late.

The sad fact is that over the next few days, it is likely that a number of people will lose their lives unneccessarily in avalanches. News is already in of four deaths in St Anton and two in Zurs yesterday.

If you are thinking of heading off piste, please take precautions and make sure you understand the risks you are taking.
