Perfect breeding conditions
Considering on average about 15 people are likely to have used your rental ski boots before you, and with feet sweating on average about half a pint a day, your ski boots are the perfect breeding ground for germs like athlete’s foot!

Yuk! But Daktarin, the athlete’s foot treatment, and ski boot expert Hamish Wolfenden have put together some top tips to help you keep your feet healthy and avoid athlete’s foot this winter.

Wolfenden told Natives "Whilst skiing, large forces are applied through the body and especially the feet. Your feet are working hard and, even though skiing involves cold temperatures, feet are prone to excessive perspiration. This can create the warm, moist conditions that fungi thrive in. "

Here are Daktarin and Hamish's ten top tips to help you avoid being ‘wiped out’ by athlete’s foot on the slopes this year:

Top tips to healthy boots
1. Treat any existing signs of athlete’s foot with a ketoconazole cream such as Daktarin Gold for one week prior to your skiing holiday to help relieve itchinG

2. Make sure your toenails are short – long toenails confined to ski / snowboard boots all day provide an ideal environment for fungal growth

3. Change your socks daily, and wear good quality cotton or wool socks that allow your feet to breathe and encourage moisture absorption

4. Wash socks at 60 degrees to destroy fungal spores

5. If the boot room you are using is not heated, you should remove the linings from your boots each day and take them to your bedroom to allow them to air and dry thoroughly

6. Wash your feet before and after being on the slopes to help remove any fungal spores

7. Try to wear flip-flops in the boot rooms and showers

8. Fungi thrive in moist conditions. Therefore, make sure you dry your feet thoroughly after bathing, particularly between your toes

9. Avoid sharing towels or footwear

10. Use a preventative anti-fungal treatment before putting on your boots each morning to help prevent athlete’s foot
