The word from Seefeld is that the Nokia
Air & Style 2004 was a sell-out, proving its status as the world´s
largest and most respected freestyle snowboarding event.
Board by day, party by night
Around 30,000 enthusiastic visitors came to watch freestyle snowboarding
at its best, with the after parties ensuring each day rocked until
the early hours.
The
competition concept remained the same as last year due to its simplicity
and efficiency with 16 riders fighting for five spots in the Superfinals.
Riders had to complete 2 different jumps, one marked on technical
difficulty and a second marked on style.
Style and tricks
The style jump restricted riders from doing anything more than 540°
rotations. Judges allocated 65% of the score to the main jump, whilst
the remaining 35% was based on the tricks performed on the obstacle
park in the finish area.
During
intervals in the snowboarding, the Braun FMX Jams gave the crowd
a taste of how cutting edge and impressive freestyle motocross riding
has become in the recent years. Busty "Airwastl" Wolter, Ronnie
"Renndawg" Renner, Drake "DMC" McElroy, Clifford "Flyin Hawaiin"
Adoptante and "Mad Mike" Jones gave it their all with tricks such
as Superman Seatgrabs, amazing Whipps and Tsunamis...all on snow!
Perfect
jump scoops title
In the snowboard Superfinals, Chris Kröll (AUT), Mathieu Crepel
(FRA), Nicolas Müller (GER), Jussi Oksanen (FIN) and Shaun White
(USA) battled it out for the coveted title.
Shaun White's perfect Switch Frontside 900 technical
jump combined with points from his impressive Switch Frontside 360
style jump to give him the win for a second year running. The celebrations
then kicked off with a storming live set from Swedish punk rockers
"Millencollin".
Munich Olympic Stadium 2005
All eyes will be on Germany next year as this prestigious event
grows and relocates to the Olympic Stadium in Munich for the first
ever "Air & Style Winter Games".
