It's beginning! Those lucky, lucky people over in the US have has
some seriously stormy weather of late, bringing serious snow to
the highlands. Mammoth Mountain has enjoyed over 120cm of snow already
and is open for business well before usual.
Arapahoe to open this weekend
Arapahoe Basin ski area will open for the 2004-2005 ski season this
Friday 22 October, A-Basin’s earliest opening on record. The Exhibition
chair will open to the public at 9:00 a.m. and skiers and riders
can look forward to a 12 - 20 inch base on the High Noon run.
A-Basin managers credit the relatively new snowmaking system for
the early opening. Snowmaking crews have made snow a total of fourteen
nights since late September. “The man made base combined with the
18” of natural snow in September and close to a foot of snow in
October will provide a quality product from midway to the base area
on opening day,” said Alan Henceroth, Director of Mountain Operations
at Arapahoe Basin.
Boreal to open thursday
But even sooner than that, Boreal Mountain Resort will open for
the winter 2004|2005 ski and snowboard season Thursday 21 October.
With lifts opening at an early 8:29 am, Boreal retains its claim
to fame for being California’s first ski and snowboard resort open
for business.
Because of the significantly large snow storm that walloped the
Tahoe area Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning, Boreal currently
has a three-foot base of completely natural snow.
Loveland already up and running
Some early snowfalls have allowed the opeing of Loveland even earlier
than expected, and Timberline is still opening at weekends, if with
limited pistes.
So all in all, it looks like it's gonna be a big
one! Let it snow, let it snow...
