NEW BREED ROAR INTO ACTION

11 October 2004

The 2nd Natives 'New Breed' freestyle ski comp wowed the crowds at the British Ski & Board Show at the NEC this weekend.

Nine of the UK's best young riders took on a specially designed half-pipe, as MC Pat Sharples described the action for massive crowds. Check the gallery for more pics.

Pre-comp favourite, Mike Wakefield - only 19, but current British Half-Pipe & Slopestyle Champion - secured first place with a stunning mix of technically superb flares, as well as his trademark McTwist - still the only British skier to be able to pull off this move.

The battle for second spot was incredibly tight between Sheffield rider Joe Blackwell, 18, and the Milton Keynes-based Mark Watson, 20. Only a count-back of total points scored (for height, style and technical difficulty) separated the two, with Watson's 192 just shading Blackwell by three points.

The women's comp was won by 18 year old Becky Hammond, also from Sheffield, who capped the afternoon with a perfectly executed 360. Stoke-based Shelly Jones took second spot.

Spot prizes were won by Ted Foster (busting his bindings in a huge landing), Ben Hawker (threatening the judges' lives!), Dan Botham (going higher than Mike Wakefield) and Eddie Thelwell (for his classy jib stall).

Many thanks to everyone involved in the comp, especially the judges - Zack Wragg (Dark Summer), Jon White and Mark Harris - and all the team at Global Snowshows, for supporting Britain's young riders.

Watch out for more reports and photos of this event in Dark Summer later this year.
