SHORT LIVED SEASON IN THE ANDES

08 October 2004

The 04 season in the southern Hemisphere has been irregular, while in New Zealand they registered a snowfall record, extending the season, in the Andes the story was completely different – certainly “not a very good season” from this part of the world.

No snow in August
The season started like every year in late June and the snow came with regularity until August, the Santa Rosa storm that comes every year during the last week of August didnt bring enough snow to keep the hope of closing the season on October like every year.

Just a few more cold fronts from the Pacific Ocean brought some snow to enjoy a fine September in Catedral Alta Patagonia and Chapelco. Las Leñas suffered its altitude and this year, the freeriding paradise of Argentina was the first to say goodbye to the ´04 season.

No snow in September
Chapelco registered a snow fall of almost 6m. However, the lack of cold fronts during September (the last big snowfall was 06 Sept) forced the resort end the season on 03 October.

Catedral Alta Patagonia suffered the same fate and right after the first edition of the Tetrathlon Catedral, and the Ariel y Bocha Memorial Race, the resort which had the misfortune of a lift accident in the middle of the season with 15 tourists wounded, decided to put and end in this “season to forget”.

Better luck next year?
Locals say that after a bad season always a good one comes. But the 2004 season is over in the Andes for sure now, so we look forward to hopefully better news for the year to come.
