Gillings and Neilson triumph at the Season Opening in Chile
Zoe Gillings (GBR) and Drew Neilson (CAN) are the winners of the
first Snowboard Cross of the NOKIA Snowboard FIS World Cup 2004/2005
held 16 September in Valle Nevado, Chile. Gillings successfully
competed against Kathrin Kellenberger (SUI), Austrian Manuela Riegler
and Lindsey Jacobellis (USA) in the women's final run and therefore
celebrated her first World Cup victory ever.
In the well-staffed men's final, 30 years-old Neilson
crossed the finish line in front of the Snowboard Cross World Cup
winner of 2004 Xavier Delerue (FRA). Simone Malusa from Italy took
the third place. Mateusz Ligocki (POL) who surprisingly made it
in the final came in fourth.
"I'm super happy because this was my first World Cup victory ever",
said Gillings who was all smiles. "Due to this, it's a big motivation
for me to repeat my good performance in tomorrow's race. I enjoyed
the course because one had a lot of different possibilities to ride."
US pips Gillings to top spot
Americans dominated the second World Cup day (17 Sept) in Valle
Nevado - Lindsey Jacobellis (USA) and Graham Watanabe (USA) won
the second Snowboard Cross. In the Chilean ski resort, Jacobellis
increased her efficiency compared to the first event and relegated
yesterday's winner Zoe Gillings (GBR) to the second spot and Austrian
riders Doresia Krings and Manuela Riegler came in third and fourth.
In the men's competition, the podium was dominated
by underdogs. Graham Watanabe celebrated his first World Cup victory
of his career in front of Polish Mateusz Ligocki who realized his
career's best result too. Mario Fuchs from Austria saved the third
spot in front of Drew Neilson (CAN) who was unbeatable in Thursday's
Snowboard Cross.
