AIM SERIES HEADS TO EDINBURGH

25 August 2004

The AIM (Artificial, Indoor, Mountain) Series 2004 headed to Edinburgh last weekend to the Midlothian Ski Slope at Hillend.

SATURDAY - Snowboard Boardercross, National Championships
In Saturday's snowboard competition 64 snowboarders from all over the UK competed in the Boardercross championships, Slopestyle and Big Air. The warm weather slowed the course down a little but there was still action and few tense moments as local Michael Bates took on Matthew Gibson, Sheffield and Craig Howie, taking the champion's title. Bates changed his snowboard to skis on Sunday and took home the Masters Skiercross champion's title as well. In the women's competition it was UK's dryslope queen and British Big Air champion Mollie Percival from Bury who won the overall title.

Posy DixonSnowboard Slopestyle
The close competition was between two locals Craig Howie and Peter Weir, both Edinburgh, and young Jamie Nicholls (11 yrs), Halifax. Howie impressed with a shifty to shifty over the two woops, to a corked 5 over the jump to finish with a 50:50 to boardslide on the kinked rail, beating Nicholls to the first place with one point. More local talent was on display in the women's competition as Posy Dixon, Edinburgh, earned first place.

Craig HowieSnowboard Big Air
It was definitely Craig Howie's day! He stunned the judges when he landed a perfectly executed backside 9 to the roars of the crowd, leaving Vic Boys, Bradford, and Matthew Gibson in second and third place respectively. In the afternoon Big Air competition Mollie Percival stole the show with her trademark trick backside 360 tailgrab..

SUNDAY - Skiercross, National Championships
With the slightly cooler weather the Dendix was a bit faster on the Sunday and the 61 skiers that turned up for the competition had excellent conditions for their race. In a fast and furious final another alpine racer, formerly on the Scottish team, Blair Aitken, Edinburgh, picked the best line through the course beating Simon Bates, Edinburgh and Andy Bennett, Sheffield to the title. In the women's race Emma Londsdale, Settle, walked away with yet another champion's title to her name after being the day's fastest lady down the course.

Ski Slopestyle
Sheffield skiers Mark Elliott and Paddy Graham both showed great style in their slopestyle runs, but Elliott proved more technical with his double shifty 180 over the jump to a fakie rail slide and won the first place in front of Graham. The women's favourite Emma Londsdale performed a solid run of 360 to railslide, finishing first.

Ski Big Air
Paddy Graham got his revenge in the Big Air competition when he beat local ski wizz kid Murray Buchan, Edinburgh (12 yrs) to the first place with his corked 5. In the women's Big Air comp Carmichael and Tyler were again beaten by superwoman Emma Londsdale's clean 360.
