Today is the deadline for prospective purchasors to put in offers
for the troubled ski areas of Glenshee and Glencoe, which went on
sale in the year. They are owned by the Glenshee Chairlift Company
which then went into receivership after the sale was announced.
Glenshee
A group of 25 individuals was set up to raise funds to keep Glenshee
operational over the winter, The Friends of Glenshee, but it now
seems likely that it will dissolve. They wish to buy the resort
and despite raising the asking price, are still looking for future
funding. The Glenshee Chairlift Company Ltd, which owns both the
ski centre and golf course, went into receivership on 6 May after
losing an estimated £1 million since 2002 due to a series of poor
winters.
Glencoe
It is probable, according to the receivers of the ski areas, that
Glencoe Mountain Resort Ltd is to be the new owner as the preferred
bidder. This should also save several jobs within Scotland's orginal
ski area - two full time and several seasonal. A group of volunteers
ran the resort when snow allowed last winter, following an announcement
at the start of the season that the area was not to operate.
Late snow
Ironically, after a particularly poor winter, fresh snow was reported
to be falling on Cairngorm over the weekend (21 jun) as temperature
plummeted to around zero.
28 June - Update
The future of the troubled Glenshee ski centre will not be resolved
until at least next week. The closing date for offers for the centre
and Glenisla golf course passed at 4pm Friday, but a spokeswoman
for the joint receivers, Blair Nimmo and Neil Armour, said she was
unable to confirm how many bids had been received. She said it would
be at least next week before the receivers announce a preferred
bidder.
