US RESORT UP FOR GRABS ON EBAY

14 June 2004

Fancy owning a ski resort?
First of all there was the Pakistan resort of Malam Jabba , then Laurel Mountain and more recently Glenshee and Glencoe up for public sale. There was even the opportunity to own an entire ski club with indoor slopes and 40,000 members in South Africa, but now there's another chance to own your own resort in the US.

US Ski Area For Sale on eBay

The owner of the defunct Maple Valley ski area in Southern Vermont has put the ski resort up for sale at $2 million on eBay. The ski area is the second US ski area known to have been offered for sale on the internet auction site. In 2002 Laurel Mountain in Pennsylvania was offered for $9.5 million as straight sale (without immediate success, although generating international publicity for the sale).

Maple Valley is a 400-acre, 16-trail ski area with two double chair lifts, two surface lifts, snow making infrastructure and night skiing. It last opened for the 2000-01 season. The listing runs for 30 days. "It's a great opportunity to open a family-friendly ski area," said Michael Granger, the owner of Granger Real Estate who is handling the sale. "The key to it is finding out how to use the space year-round."

Lodge and groomers included
The sale includes the base lodge, groomers and various other ski resort odds and ends. The ski area has been up for sale through more conventional channels for the best part of a year. Since the eBay listing went live there have reportedly been fresh enquiries including one interested party who offered to swap his $2.9 million dollar yacht for the ski area. Mr Granger stated that he hoped that the area would remain a ski area under new ownership and reported that a recent study had shown that the area behind the base lodge was ideal for the building of one or two half pipes.

Other ski related gems available on Ebay include a poster priced at $0.01, a time share in the region of £21,000 and this delightful Versace all-in-one priced at £103.
