MOUNTAIN QUEST WINTER TRIATHLON

14 January 2004

The second race of the Mountain Quest Winter Triathlon Series is slated for February 8, 2004 at Colorado's Snow Mountain Ranch, near Winter Park.

Shape up in winter
The first race took place on December 22, 2003, and was won by Coloradans Mike Kloser of Vail and Monique Merrill of Breckenridge. Kloser, the series champion for the past two years and winner of nearly every major adventure race in the world, loves doing winter triathlons.

"It's such an awesome way to stay in racing shape during the cold winter months - plus, they're a blast!" says Kloser.

Merrill is not new to challenging events either. She has won numerous world-class events including the grueling Montezuma's Revenge mountain bike race, and several off-road multi-sport races.

Run - ride - ski
The February 8 race will be slightly longer than the earlier event, won by Kloser in a time of 1:01:56. It will consist of a 5-kilometer run on snow-covered road, 10km mountain bike ride on hard-packed Nordic ski trails, and an 8km cross-country ski.

Along with the elite racers at the top, many first-time and "amateur" racers love winter triathlon, as well. Master's racer Johnny Chapin of Fort Collins loves the races.

"Although I finish well behind the leaders, it's always great to get out in the beauty of the winter and push yourself a little bit ... well, maybe a lot!" remarked Chapin.

Winter triathlon has become quite popular in Europe and Canada, and the International Triathlon Union (ITU) has been sponsoring Winter Triathlon world championships since 1997.
