ZERMATT NEW YEAR

02 January 2004

Snow snow snow
New Years Eve 2004 proved to be an epic, fresh snow during the afternoon whitened up the village nicely but it cleared up at night.

Rocket launchers and champagne
For the last few days teenage children have been making the most of the firework opportunities (in the supermarkets here you can buy ones that look like rocket launchers) so by the big night it was like downtown Basra. The bars & restaurants had been heaving all evening & by 11.45 there were several thousand people in the church square.

Jump around
As per last year even though the authorities had provided a 'sound system' there was no big countdown to midnight but we all jumped around & got covered in champagne & beer anyway, shame about the lack of Church bells but never the less a great atmosphere. Many of the bars were charging extortionate amounts of money to get in but not the North Wall or Central both of which hosted great parties all night.

One for the ladies
The last revelers staggered out the central at 11.00am. New Years morning was the time to ski for those that got to bed early enough, the quietest day on the mountain for some time. Snow conditions have steadily improved all week & January is looking hopeful, as was Mark Harris (right) on New Year's morning.
