Bodes
well for Miller
World Cup leader and reigning World Champion Bode Miller ended what
he called an “embarrassing” victory drought by American men in World
Cup races on American soil on Saturday, capturing his second consecutive
GS, in Park City. Having previously won the season opening GS at
Soelden, Austria, he won in Utah by nearly a second - the first
U.S. men’s victory since March 1984 when Bill Johnson won a downhill
in Aspen.
Austrian competition
In a race when teammate Erik Schlopy injured his left knee in a
first-run crash, Miller’s winning time for the eighth victory of
his career was 2:20.84. Andreas Schifferer, better known as a speed
specialist, came second in 2:21.70 and another Austrian and leader
after the opening leg, Hans Knauss was third in 2:21.84.
Miller said “I’m a little
surprised the gap was so big. I don’t lack for motivation - I put
out maximum effort. I’m not willing to do otherwise in front of
the home crowd. The United States is not a great second-place country
- you’re just the first loser.”" He credited his Rossignol GS skis
with giving him a major advantage over his competitors; “it really
isn’t fair".
Baxters unqualified
Baxter brothers, Alain and Noel, disappointed, both failing to qualify
for the second run.
