12 September 2003

Although occasionally surpassing Vail in skier days, Breckenridge has bloomed as a result of an agreement with the town that has cleared the way for a $400 million development, increasing intermediate terrain by 30 percent.

Whistler-Blackcomb of British Columbia retained its rank as No. 2. Spokesman Christopher Nicolson pointed to the Canadian dollar as an advantage for American guests, and also to the huge skiing area of more than 7,000 acres of skiing.

Other climbers were Telluride, benefiting from new terrain opened in Prospect Bowl two years ago, heading up from 19th to 10th.

For the third straight year, six of the 10 top resorts were in Colorado.

As for Vail itself, Ski Magazine executive editor Greg Ditrinco said: "Vail has become America's ultimate ski destination. Better than any resort in North America, Vail delivers to every member of the skiing family. The resort puts a lot of time and creativity into staying fresh and innovative to meet the changing needs of today's skier. And it shows."
