Pamplona has 'running of the bulls' - Wanaka has 'running of the sheep'. It's all part of the David Reid Homes Wanakafest that takes place in Wanaka from 6-12 September.

Fastest sheep in the South
Groups of local school children have each adopted a sheep that will, with the help of a suitably attired jockey, race down Pembroke Park in the quest to become the fastest sheep in the south.

The event makes up part of the 'Country' day on 8 September from 3.30pm. The afternoon continues with country sports that include gumboot throwing, pine tree tossing, cowpat spinning and an alpaca obstacle course. Plus the bulls do get to make an appearance with a display by Wanaka Rodeo. The day finishes with a ho-down in the park with live country music from Dunedin band, the Oxo-Cubans.
