NZ RUMOURS DISPELLED

18 August 2003

Rumours unfounded
nzski.com's big boss Duncan Smith has taken affirmative action to refute three rumours doing the rounds this season. They are:

- this is the worst season in 20 years
- nzski.com is almost out of water for snowmaking and when it runs out, the season will finish
- staff are about to be laid off and ski areas shut

Too warm to make snow

It's no on three counts, said Smith emphatically. "I find it quite dismaying - one that the rumours exist and secondly, because Queenstown and its people should be supporting our product. If 10-20 cms of snow fell, it would change the situation immediately. As for snowmaking, there's plenty of water - it's simply been too warm to make snow."

Smith is emphatic that the main trail skiing and boarding at Coronet Peak and the Remarkables is "very, very good". But he empathises with local skiers starved of powder days and good off-piste conditions who've experienced great seasons in the past.

More seasonal accommodation to become backpackers?
In a related issue for season workers, a new development planned for downtown Queenstown that would help resolve the chronic shortage of accommodation for season workers could now become a backpackers. The building was initially touted as 'short-term worker accommodation' with double beds in 69 rooms, housing up to 138 people.

However Mountain Scene has reported that fitout work has now stopped while proposals are considered for more intensive visitor accommodation, including 44 four-bunk rooms, creating a giant backpackers.
