All five Scottish ski areas are insisting that long leashes are
used with snowboards, starting this season to protect all slope
users.
Too many near misses
The number of 'near misses' and actual injuries caused by runaway
boards rises each year, with the potential for causing serious or
even fatal injury of growing concern to ski patrollers and ski area
management.
The danger period seems to be when
boards are being carried and get dropped, are being put on or taken
off, or are being misused. Last season a runaway board hit a girl
causing a serious knee injury, and the young man who tried to stop
the board crashed rupturing his kidney.
Leash attached at all times
The upshot of this is that all five Scottish ski areas are insisting
that long leashes are used starting this season. If boards are being
carried, the leash should remain attached to the front leg, or clipped
to an arm. Remember, if your snowboard takes off down the hill and
injures someone, it leaves you open to litigation.
