The 2003 Rip Curl Freeski Pro resumed this
week at Victoria's Mount Hotham, with the Ansell Big Air. A light
dusting of snow on Wednesday night helped produce excellent conditions,
with four of the event's seven international men's competitors progressing
from the morning's elimination round, along with six Australians.
Frenchman wins big air
On his first trip to Australia, French Pierre Espargiliere (23)
impressed the judges most off the tabletop launching pad in the
afternoon finals, with his best jump scoring 8.6 out of 10 and giving
him a narrow win in the Big Air over Canadian Jon McMurray (19).
McMurray's best jump today scored 8.5, with the Big Air runner-up
placing lifting him into the lead for the overall title following
his third placing in Tuesday's Terrain Park leg. Arriving in Australia
on Monday, McMurray had not been on skis for more than four months.
Australians fighting back
The the Ansell Big Air third place went to Aussie Oddy Graham (22),
his best jump scoring 8.3. He's now third in the battle for the
overall title, following his fourth placing in Tuesday's Terrain
Park, while Victorian Christian Sirianni was fifth in the Big Air
today and holds onto second spot in the hunt for the title of 2003
overall champion.
In the all-Australian women's division,
the event's youngest competitor, 16-year-old Victorian Anna Segal,
upstaged her older rivals for the second time to extend her lead
for the overall title, with victory in the Big Air following her
win in Tuesday's Terrain Park leg.
Quarter Pipe next
The 2003 Rip Curl Freeski Pro is set to reach its climax under lights
tonight with the staging of the FHM Quarter Pipe to decide who skis
away with the biggest share of the Australian $10,000 prizemoney
on offer.
