PERISHER WILD WINTER WEEKEND

01 August 2003

This weekend Perisher Blue hosts the craziest, most fun and action packed series of events in the Australian snowfields, the Coca-Cola Wild Winter Weekend. In it's 15th year, competitors dash, jump and splash their way down the slopes in the pursuit of alpine glory and a slice of over $20,000 cash.

Coke in the pipe
It started with a brand new 'Coke in the pipe' event held in the Perisher Blue Half Pipe on Thursday. Sixteen invited competitors put on a spectacular display as both skiers and boarders performed for the cameras. The winner was boarder Shay Paxton who pulled the big moves and wowed the crowd.

Shred for Bread
Day 2 saw boarders get another chance at the cash in the 'Coca-Cola Shred for Bread',
a boardercross style event held on the immaculately prepared course, along side the Village 8 Express. In the 'Shred', 80 entrants competed over a series of heats and rounds. The total prize pool was $4,000 with Shay Paxton also the winner.

Leap for Loot
The 'Leap' is a big air event for skiers and boarders, an expression session for aerial skiers and boarders. Competitors are judged on their take offs, aerial actions and their landings. Held at the aerial site at Perisher Valley, 50 entrants completed one jump with the view of making the top 10 ten. The top 10 contested the final and the $4,000 prize money was split, with Nick Gregory walking away with a huge smile.

Dash for Cash
The Saturday 'Dash' is a winner takes all, limited rules downhill/uphill/downhill race that has provides some very exciting snow action. Skiing legend Steven Lee was the first ever winner and he again joins the TV commentary team. The 'Dash' will be held on and below Olympic on Mt Perisher. Skiers and boarders compete in separate events.

Tubes racing
Day 4 is the very popular 'Tubes' racing. This is a slipping, sliding inflatable inner tubes scramble, held in the Perisher half pipe and is comprised of elimination heats, with winners advancing to the next round till a final group remains and the prize money is shared.

Jump for Cash
People have been having fun at Perisher Blue by jumping into this special icy pool with its specially prepared jump for the last 14 years. They have jumped solo, in teams, in fancy dress, on contraptions, long skis, snowboards, surf boats and even on fire. Cash prizes are awarded for distance, the best splash, and money bags are even suspended in the air for those 'leaping loonies' who go for height rather than distance. Spectators who get there early enough can get a seat in the grandstand located alongside the pool and rate each jump.

The seven events will be recorded for television and telecast as a 2 hour special on Channel 9's Wide World of Sports on August 23 between 2 - 4pm and later on Fox Sports.
