SKI TEAM LUGGAGE LEFT BEHIND

25 July 2003

Luggage in London, skiers in Queenstown
That's the case - but sadly, not the suitcases - for the Norwegian men's ski team .

The team is in New Zealand for next week's 50 kilometre endurance races at Coronet Peak. The skiers arrived from Europe this week but their luggage could be anywhere, after falling victim to the wildcat strikes at Heathrow airport in London.

Not dressed for winter
The team eventually arrived in chilly Christchurch in only their summer tee shirts, without their luggage or ski gear. The team has had to borrow equipment and has been given a small grant from Qantas to buy some Queenstown clothes.

The strikes are a result of industrial action taken against British Airways by employees angry about a new 'clocking in' system. Baggage handlers and ground staff are already taking action, and today BA engineers are threatening to join the strikes.
