SAAS FEE SUMMER CAMP

18 July 2003

Last week saw the 8th annual Warren Smith Ski Academy summer performance coaching series held in Saas Fee, Switzerland.

Amazing Snow
Despite Europe experiencing one of the hottest June's on record Saas Fee (www.saas-fee.ch) provided exceptional skiing conditions whilst other glacial ski areas struggled. Thanks to the northerly aspect of the ski area and the dedication of the Saas Fee mountain staff course participants skied from 8am till 2pm everyday.

Great Skiing Area
During the course each individual's personal performance was looked at in the key areas of performance carving, steeps, moguls and freeride. For the first time on a summer course skier cross was included in the coaching, the permanent skier cross course at Saas Fee gave skiers the chance to have a go at the this new and exciting form of racing which also develops all areas of skiing technique.

Technique Improves
As with all elements of the course the individuals were able to work at their own pace and progressively develop new skills. The learning process was enhanced by regular video analysis that provided each skier with a critical appraisal of their ski technique and development throughout the week. With up to 6 hours per day on snow all the skiers on the course developed their technique and will enter the coming winter season better equipped to ski the whole mountain.

The Wedding
A first this summer for the Academy courses was the addition of a wedding during the course. Two course participants decided that Saas-Fee was the ideal location to get hitched. The wedding was a great success and all the course participants got involved, raising there skis outside the church for the happy couple, Dean and Viv Smith, to walk under. Lucky for the happy couple (and the drunken course member) that the following day was a day off during the course!
