It's now less than two weeks until the Southern Lakes ski fields
open. There's a huge sense of anticipation in town, with temperatures
getting gradually colder over the past few weeks it seems that the
dump everyone's waiting for is just around the corner.
Coronet Peak
The resort was supposed to open last weekend but the opening date
has now unfortunately been postponed due to lack of snow. The new
opening date has not yet been established but as of yesterday a
huge snow gun mission was started up the hill. The mountain staff
hope to blast the mountain for 90 hours before opening. The current
base level is 3 cm.
The Remarkables
The Remarkables seem to have the best coverage so far, and after
a small dump last Saturday night now has a 10 cm base coverage.
The mountain is however one of the later mountains due to opening
due to lift and fencing maintenance. The Remarks are set to open
on June 28th.
Cardrona
Cardrona has also been receiving it's fair share of snow recently.
Due to open in just under two weeks on June 21st, the resort currently
has an upper base of 15 cm and lower covering of 7 cm. Cardrona
prides itself as being the only Kiwi hill with no snow making facilities,
the mountain generally has reliably good snow.
Treble Cone
I check the coverage from my bedroom every morning, but Treble Cone
is looking a bit bare. Coverage is slight but have clearly improved
over the past weeks, and the summit now has snow yet unfortunately
the top of the 6 man chair and below is yet to be touched. Over
the weekend the upper mountain received 10 cm of new snow. Oh well,
still 9 days to go...a lot can happen.
