AUSTRIA STILL POPULAR WITH NO SNOW

27 May 2003

Tourists set the pace
Despite the lack of summer snow, Austria has been revealed as country with the biggest increase in visitor numbers, the mountains and lakes pulling in the tourists. Government figures suggest that Austria is the fastest-growing destination for British holidaymakers, while Israel is the country that has seen the biggest decline in visitors.

Year round snow in Austria?
Research by the Office for National Statistics reveal that Austria has seen an increase of 37 per cent in the past three years, largely, it seems because there has been a huge increase in the number of no-frills flights to and from the country. The Austrian National Tourist Office said that this is despite recent research showing that two-thirds of Britons apparently think that it snows all year round in Austria. In fact the lakes were warmer than anywhere else in the Mediterranean Sea last summer at around 22C.

After Austria, the popularity ratings were:
2. Yugoslavia (32% up)
3. Turkey (23%up)
4. New Zealand (21% up)
5. Central and Eastern Europe and the Middle East excluding Israel (20% up)

The biggest fallers were:
1. Israel (62% down)
2, Iceland (29% down)
3. Canada (18% down)
4.
United States (16% down)
5. Gibraltar, (9% down).
