A new guide warning about some of the dangers of travel is to be
given to young travellers by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office
(FCO).
According to a report in The Times, 300,000 copies of the passport-sized
guide, part of the 'Know Before You Go' campaign, will be given
to young people at summer events including Glastonbury, Gay Pride
and the Newquay Surf Festival.
Youth behaving badly
The guide has been published on the back of a Government survey
that suggests many young British travellers act irresponsibly while
abroad. Of 1,000 16-30 year-olds questioned, a third admitted doing
“stupid things” on holiday. Three quarters said they drunk excessively,
28 per cent said they had gone swimming while drunk, and 27 per
cent admitted having casual sex. A significant 28 per cent of young
travellers from the UK also do not take out travel insurance (don't
let this be you! Have a glance at the Natives section on insurance).
FCO Minister Baroness Amos said: “British travellers are putting
themselves at risk, particularly young travellers. Many of the holiday
horrors can be avoided by taking simple precautions.”
No "get out of jail free"
However, Tom Griffiths, of the online 'travel community' gapyear.com,
told The Times the guide would not help if people continued to act
irresponsibly: “They think that if they are in trouble Jack Straw
will turn up on his while charger and sort it all out, but consular
staff can’t give you a ‘get out of jail free’ card.”
