Newquay host surf comp
The Rip Curl Boardmasters, in association with The Daily Telegraph,
returns this summer to Fistral Beach, Newquay, for another 9 days
of surf, skate and non-stop partying. From 26th July to 3rd August,
international athletes will battle it out for the Boardmaster's
titles, at the UK's most famous surf break.
Now
in its 22nd year, the Rip Curl Boardmasters has grown from a regional
surf contest into the UK's largest free lifestyle sports festival,
attracting some 100,000. The event hosts the only Men's surfing
competition on the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World
Tour in the UK and with this year's increased prize purse of $80,000
should draw top International names.
Last years event featured British surfing legend
Russell Winters, who took the title, together with Shane Dorian
(Hw), Jamie O' Brien (Hw), Paul Canning (SA) and former world champion,
Martin Potter (UK).
Nokia Women's Pro
For the first time since 1998, the female
pros will be back in town, ready to don their wet suits, with the
introduction of the Nokia Women's Pro. Nokia is offering beachgoers
a giant chat screen, which will feature a selection of cult surf
films and action sport footage as well as keeping everyone up to
date with the action.
The Freestyle Expression Session will showcase some of the most
radical & progressive freestyle surfing. Without the constraints
of normal competition format, surfers are able to pull the most
expressive, fin busting, powerful maneuvers, with the added bonus
of winning $5,000. Watch out for Jamie O'Brien and his legendary
540 rodeo.
On the beach...
The
skate scene is guaranteed to kick off with the introduction of the
Fructis-Style Vert Masters and its $17,500 moneybag. In previous
contests, UK's Ali Cairns (UK champ) and Pete King (UK) have been
well known favourites at the Boardmasters, as well as International
giants as Renton Millar (Aus), Sergie Venture (US), Jocke Olsson
(Sweden) and Frenchman Terence Bougdour.
Eat, drink and party
And for the armchair sportsman and woman? The beach bar provides
the perfect place to kick back and soak up the Cornish rays, with
DJs spinning the funkiest tunes from the top deck. Sundowners at
six will pave the way the legendary Boardmasters parties that take
place each night at Newquay's top nightspots. Names such as Trevor
Nelson, Radio 1's Fergie and So Solid rocked the West Coast in 2002.
Whether
you're there to check out the awesome surfing or to simply chill
with your mates, the festival will provide something for everyone.
The whole week will bea good one with surfing, skating, beach bar
and MISS REEF BIKINI CONTEST!!! The website
is live from 14th April.
