British Land National Champions Take their Success
to the Austrians
Fresh from their overall victories at the 25th anniversary British
Land National Ski Championships in Tignes, overall champions Chemmy
Alcott (20, Twickenham) and Noel Baxter (21, Aviemore) enjoyed further
podium success at the Austrian National championships in Filzmoos
and Altenmarkt over the weekend (28 30 March 2003).
 Chemmy
Alcott, who swept the board at the British Championships, winning
the ladies titles in all disciplines and the overall Victrix Ludorum
title put in a strong performance in the Austrian Super G event
in Altenmarkt finishing 3rd behind Austrian speed specialists Brigitte
Obermoser and Michaela Dorfmeister, who finsished the World Cup
season in 12th and 3rd respectively in the Super G discipline. Chemmy
brings her season to a close now ranked in the top 100 in three
of the four Alpine disciplines.
Baxter and Mickel rank highly
Noel Baxter, who snatched the British Slalom title from older brother
Alain in Tignes two weeks ago and denied Downhill Champion, Finlay
Mickel (25, Edinburgh) the overall, also took bronze in the Austrian
menšs slalom event behind World Cup character, Manfred Pranger,
who ended his best World Cup season to date finishing 5th in the
slalom standings.
As the season draws to a close, British focus shifts to the British
Land Junior & Children Championships to be held in Pitztal, Austria
next week (6 11 April 2003). David Harrison and James Barcock
are leading British contenders, but will face a strong challenge
from athletes working within the newly formed Home Nations Combined
Squad.
