BRITISH LAND CHAMPIONSHIPS

26 March 2003

Super G | Downhill | Slalom

Final day - Slalom
The pre championships script predicted records aplenty for Alain Baxter but it was younger brother Noel who stole the limelight on the final day of The British Land National Ski Championships in Tignes.

Taking the Men's Slalom title after a tight four way challenge which saw him convert a first run lead to a good victory, Noel also won the overall Men's Combined Champion title which Alain has won five times. With a second in the Downhill, sixth in the Super G, and fourth in the Giant Slalom, Noel needed to win with Finlay Mickel eighth or worse to take the overall title.Mickel fought valiantly down the slalom runs but eleventh place meant Noel won the Combined by seven points.

Chemmy victory
If the Men's title chase was the closest for years, there was no mistaking the momentum the remarkable Chemmy Alcott maintained through the week. She was delighted to win the Slalom title for first time to complete here perfect clean sweep of all four discplines, ensuring she comfortably retained the Victrix Ludorum trophy.

Baxter brothers
Alain Baxter was generous in his praise not just for his brother, but also Johnny Moulder-Brown, who took third and skied the fastest second run time, and James Leuzinger who lay third after the first run. 'I made a small mistake near the bottom of the second run and Noel didn't which I guess was the difference, but he skied well. I was a little cautious on the first run thinking that to win a British championship you have to get down and so gave it a bit more on the second run. It is incredible how close we are in training every day and we all push each other hard which just means that on race days like this any one of us could win. It is slightly different at World Cup for example where we are spread a bit more through the field but it was a good race and Noel deserved to win' said Alain whose season finished today.

' I am looking forward to a real relaxing rest. With everything going on last year there was never any time to switch off and really unwind so it's going to be good to be home.' 'I have had a great season and I'm delighted to be up where I am. I have halved my world ranking each year for the last two years and made good results early this season so the pressure has been off from an early stage and now this is just great' said a delighted Noel today. 'Having skied this hill so often since I was kid really helps so I was quite confident on the second run.'
