Super G
Once again Chemmy Alcott and Finlay
Mickel lifted the main titles today at The British Land National
Ski Championships, both the current British Champions posting comfortable
defences of the Super G titles they won in Saalbach-Hinterglemm,
Austria last year.
Mickel continues reign
Mickel seized every opportunity to stake his claim to this third
successive reign as Super G champion. With the course set by his
British Land Alpine Team coach Mark Tilston on Tignes Lognan piste,
Mickel was wise not to let familiarity breed contempt as it was
riddled with small surprises which meant that a careful inspection
was vital.
Skiing to a margin of 1.67 seconds over Roger Cruickshank, Mickel
was pleased to have held on to his winning record at these championships
so far. 'It's good to get two wins under the belt early on because
I think the Giant Slalom will be very close and I would not like
to say who could win it. I have done a lot of giant slalom training
in recent years but the technical team guys like Alain and Noel
Baxter may have a slight edge in that they have trained more on
the newer, shorter skis, and I have been catching up.'
Conditions were excellent once more as the spell of settled spring
weather meant perfect overhead and the cold overnight temperatures
ensured that the track held up well for the 115 competitors.
Alcott and Grieg take top places
Alcott, last year's Victrix Ludorum, was on winning form again but
her British Land Alpine Team compatriot Jo Greig skied to 0.98 of
a second of her, a respectable result for a technical disciplines
skier:
'Not bad for a slalom racer.' Grinned Greig, 'It's great to well
but I have always known I have a good tuck and can let the skis
glide well which really helps on a course like this, and I made
good turns, but I am not sure that I really fancy getting into downhill
and Super-G too much more.'
