THE LATEST FROM WHISTLER

17 March 2003

Permanently drunk...

Sweet lord, its the middle of March. Seems like I haven't stopped to think or been sober since New Years Eve, so here's whats been happening in Whistler over the last 3 months...

Theme Weeks
There's been a few of these; Whistler likes to "host" for various groups of people who completely take over the resort, most notably Brotherhood Week, and Altitude Week. Brotherhood week was a riot - 3000 black Americans were in town hell bent on having a good time all the time. The lodges on the mountains played dirty hip hop instead of easy listening, and every bar in town was packed all week. 500 big black men dancing up on the bar as best they could in ski boots is something you dont see too often...

...neither is 2000 sweaty, semi-naked gay men dancing in the Roundhouse restaurant, but that was Altitude Week for you, the gay and lesbian festival. The village was full of beautiful stylish people, men sipping pink martinis, the best lady mullets i have ever seen, and the lifties who had to clean out the gondolas after the end-of-week gay ball are probably still in therapy.

Snow
We've had it all - weeks of blue skies and no fresh snow, weeks of rain, and then somewhere perfect in between where it dumped at nights and then the sun came out all day. The alpine has been beautiful, especially round harmony chair, and the black park on Blackcomb is going off, people flying so high off the kickers they almost hit the chair. The ski outs are getting a little soggy now that the weather is warming up though; i think the official report is that they are pretty much knackered. Nice enough for slush pond surfing though, got to look on the bright side.

Making a Tit of yourself
In short, staff crossover night-skiing. Skiers board, boarders ski and bladers, well, they look stupid enough already. Everyone goes and gets pissed in Merlins, and a good time is had by all. Nuff said.

World Ski and Snowboard Festival
Sounds like its going to be a huge one in a few weeks time. Tons of competitions, invitationals, demo days, workshops, concerts, parties and free stuff. For more info check out www.wssf.com. They're still looking for volunteers to steward on and off the hill - an easy way to get the best views and meet the riders.

But it's all good...
Thats all for now, but got to end by giving some respect to the mountains and this crazy thing we do. Whistler mountain closed down yesterday due to a massive storm, and it was a sobering experience. Take an hour on a swinging chairlift, in 80mph winds, with trees falling across the line and all around you. Pretty scary. Makes you realise how small we are, how wild the mountains are, and how lucky we are to be able to do what we do safely. So keep on and on doing it ....!
