CHATEL UPDATE

12 April 2002

And so we come to the end of another season. They go faster every year, don’t they? Not the greatest in terms of snow it has to be said, but when it comes down to it I still managed to go boarding every day and surely you can’t ask more from a saisonnaires’ life that?

SarahIt was a strange season in many respects. Apart from the few ‘dumps’, such as they were, the skies were blue every day and I have probably the best winter tan ever. But I still think we got as good as anywhere else in the French Alps, if not better. At 1200m, Chatel may be too low for most of the mainstream tour operators to consider it as an option, and it should follow therefore that we shouldn’t expect too much. The fact remains though, we are only two chair lifts away from Avoriaz (1800), where we even saw pisteurs from Meribel ski-ing on one occasion, so make of that what you will...

AirIn terms of normal saisonaire activity, it was business as usual. There were the usual laughs, tears and toys thrown from the pram (and that was just from my manager!). And of course there was the inevitable trip to the airport to take an injured colleague home. So sorry it had to be you though Rach, you were the best and things were never quite the same without you (and anyone who knew her can write their own punchline to that).

Personally speaking, I had an absolute ball, although I must say if I never eat cheese again it will be too soon. The only reason you can’t hear my arteries screaming for mercy is because they’ve been well and truly drowned out by the cries of my liver surrendering.

So farewell Chatel, you were fab. Thanks to everyone at the Tunnel, The Avalanche, the L’Isba and the Fer Rouge for keeping me plied with Pastis and thus hastening my descent into madness. Many thanks also to everyone at Val D’Abondance for hastening it even further. I love you all. To my fellow Native Mark and his crew who stayed at the Amythest, it was truly a privilege to meet you all and cheers for all the drinks. May there be many more.

And for those of you that make it back next season - See you in December!

Sarah
